Amon Carter Museum shows African-American collection

Nearly 100 artworks by more than 50 African-American artists make up the Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African-American Art: Works on Paper exhibit. This special exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum from the impressive private collection of Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection will be on display through Aug. 23.

The Kelley Collection comprises one of the most comprehensive collections of African-American art from the late 1800s to the present. It includes the works of artists like Elizabeth Catlett, William H. Johnson and Charles White.

In addition to the Kelley Collection exhibit, the Carter is hosting the one-gallery exhibition, African-American Art: Selections from the Amon Carter Museum’s Collection. This latter exhibition showcases some of the museum’s landmark African-
American prints and drawings from the same timeframe as the Kelley Collection.

The museum offers free public tours for the exhibit from Thursday through Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. at the information desk.

Additionally, on July 12, the Carter hosts “Many Voices, Many Visions,” a free oncert performance by Of Many Colors, a Fort Worth vocal jazz group. The performance features music from the late 1800s to the 20th century relating to the works on view by African-American artists. The show starts at 2 p.m. Although the concert is free, reservations are required. Seating is limited; call (817) 989–5030 no later than July 2.

The Amon Carter Museum is open regularly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The museum will be closed on July 4. Per Mr. Carter’s wish, admission is always free. Parking's also free and easily accessible in the museum’s front lot or in lots across Lancaster on the museum’s south side.

The museum requests student groups or self-guided groups of 10 or more schedule an appointment with the programs manager at least a week in advance by e-mailing nancy.strickland@cartermuseum.org or calling (817) 989-5031.
