Fort Worth Contemporary Arts: Free Warhol Film Fest Jan. 29

Turn your Thursday night into a pop art adventure at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts  with a free Warhol film fest in conjunction with the “Warhol and The Shared Subject” exhibition Jan. 29. The free screening starts at 7:30 p.m. and includes three films with run times ranging from 3 minutes to 2 hours. The film line-up, a prime opportunity for film students, especially those of the avant-garde persuasion, includes:

  • “Elvis at Ferus” by Andy Warhol: This short film was shot by Warhol at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1963. The camera starts from the exterior of the gallery briefly lingering on the Elvis paintings in the window before cutting to the interior of the gallery where the camera quickly pans over the paintings there. (1963, silent, 3 min. 42 sec., b/w, 16mm film)
  • “Vinyl” by Andy Warhol: Warhol’s take on Anthony Burgess’ novel, A Clockwork Orange, is based on a script written by Ronald Tavel and stars Gerard Malanga as Victor. The film includes one of the earliest appearances of Warhol’s muse, Edie Sedgwick. (1965, sound, 66 min., b/w, 16mm film)
  • “Bootleg Empire” by Douglas Gordon: Essentially picture in picture, Gordon filmed a screening of Warhol's 8-hour-long “Empire” while living in Berlin. Because Gordon took a break during his bootlegging, his version only lasts 2 hours. (1996, silent, 125min., b/w, monitor, video transferred to DVD)

The film fest punctuates the near end of Warhol and The Shared Subject, which runs through Feb. 1. The exhibit of select photographs and paintings by Warhol parallels and mingles with photos and videos by other contemporary artists. The collection displays the modern influence of the pop-art founding father’s commercial-celebrity-crush-mocking perspective.
