Joe T. Garcia’s is a Fort Worth institution – just like the Stockyards – that’s been around since 1935. I came here with a friend’s family when we were in grade school and I’ve been finding my way back ever since.
The restaurant is just a stone’s throw from the Stockyards – that old adage – location, location, location – may be part of the reason for the restaurant’s staying power. The location can’t be beat. But, the food and margaritas are the stars here along with their beautiful patio.
With a seating capacity of 1,000, Joe T’s has some great people watching - families, couples and big groups of tourists – many in western wear – even cowboy hats. When I was there recently there were guys talking serious football sitting nearby.
There are only three items on the dinner menu – the family style dinner and either beef or chicken fajitas. The family style dinner comes with two cheese nachos, two cheese enchiladas with red sauce and two beef tacos along with rice and beans. The fajitas are served with rice, beans, guacamole and flour tortillas – although corn tortillas are available upon request. All dinners come with chips and salsa starters.
The lunch menu includes chicken flautas – chicken wrapped in a corn tortilla and deep fried, chile rellenos – mild chiles stuffed with either beef or cheese dipped in an egg batter and deep fried, tamales – pork or chicken covered in a corn dough wrapped in corn leaf and steamed and chimichangas – deep fried burritos.
Joe T’s also has a big weekend brunch featuring traditional egg dishes and menudo – soup made with intestines and hominy in a clear broth. They tout this soup on the menu as a hangover cure.
HelloDallas Tip: Joe T's does not accept credit cards or checks - it's strictly cash only. They do have an ATM, but you'll pay a hefty fee. There are plenty of banks nearby that don't charge as high a price for their instant cash.
